A Guide to Canvas Print Sizes

If you’re looking for a unique way to showcase your favourite photos, canvas prints are one of the most impressive yet budget-friendly ways to do it. The best thing about high-quality canvas prints is that they’re designed to last. They also look incredibly chic and timeless despite their affordable price.

When considering a canvas print, it’s important to think about which size you’d like for your property. We’ve mentioned that canvases are versatile, and we mean it! There are tons of sizes you can choose from with our canvas printing service.

Your photos deserve the best display, so read on for everything you need to know about canvas print sizes.

What are the standard canvas sizes?

You’re probably wondering, ‘What is standard?’ Well, standard canvas sizes are the most popular dimensions of canvas, designed to fit the majority of photographs. What makes these sizes ‘standard’ is that they’re designed to match common aspect ratios, like 4:3, 3:2, and 1:1 — but more on that later.

The most common standard canvas sizes are:

  • 8” x 10” (20 x 25cm)
  • 12” x 16” (30 x 40cm)
  • 16” x 20” (40 x 50cm)
  • 20” x 30” (50 x 76cm)

Square formats are also available, allowing you to transform your walls into a real-life Instagram grid:

  • 12” x 12” (30 x 30cm)
  • 20” x 20” (50 x 50cm)

Small canvas dimensions

12″ × 8″ (30.5 x 20.3cm)

A 12” x 8” canvas is rectangular-shaped, perfect for landscape shots and wide-angle pictures. This canvas size is popular for displaying photos in hallways, as part of a gallery wall, or above a side table in a cosy reading nook.

12″ × 10″ (30.5 x 25.4cm)

Slightly more square than the 12” x 8” canvas, this size is ideal for photos with a clear subject, whether that be a couple portrait or photos of your four-legged companion. Best suited to a home office, bedroom, or as part of a photo wall collage.

Medium canvas dimensions

16″ × 12″ (40.6 x 30.5cm)

This mid-sized canvas is an extremely versatile size, perfect for displaying everything from curated wedding shots to those candid and spontaneous travel moments. Many opt for this size as an eye-catching kitchen decor addition, or alongside other prints in a staircase gallery wall.

Medium to large canvas dimensions

20″ × 16″ (50.8 x 40.6cm)

If you’re looking for a statement canvas size that can hold its own on your wall, 20” x 16” is the smallest of suitable canvas sizes. That being said, it’s more than ideal for bold, arty prints and heartwarming portraits. These canvases make perfect bedroom statement pieces, and also work well above a console table or in a living room.

Large canvas dimensions

24″ × 12″ (61 x 30.5cm)

This is the best canvas print size for landscape, panoramic-style shots. Think city skylines, sweeping vistas, and family group photos with everyone crammed in like sardines. They look right at home above beds, sofas, and dining tables, and can go a long way in adding a visual anchor to your space.

24″ × 16″ (50.8 x 40.6cm)

The ideal canvas size for photos that tell stories. We’re talking about whimsical travel shots, engagement shoot romance, and family shots that make your heart melt. It’s a canvas size that commands attention in the best way, best installed in living rooms or stairways.

Statement canvas dimensions

30″ × 24″ (76.2 x 61cm)

30” x 24” canvases are true showstoppers. Whether you hang them above fireplaces, in an entryway, or to brighten up a blank wall to the max, this canvas size is designed to deliver — every single time.

What aspect ratio and resolution do I need for a high-quality canvas print?

We know that aspect ratios and resolutions can be confusing.

For best results, we recommend choosing a clear and sharp image with a high resolution — ideally 300 DPI (dots per inch). The more DPI, the more detail present, allowing your photo to stay crisp even when printed on a large canvas.

You’ll also want the shape of your photo (also known as aspect ratio) to match your chosen canvas size. For example, 4:3 works well for 16” x 12” canvases, 3:2 fits with 12” x 8” and 30” x 20” canvases, and 1:1 is best for square canvases.

However, when you visit your nearest PHOTO by Fujifilm store in person, you’ll be able to tell our partners exactly what you want for your canvas — and they’ll handle the rest for you.

How to hang and place your new canvas print

Once you’ve ordered or retrieved your new canvas print, it’s time to hang it up. You may already have a spot in mind, but we recommend choosing a wall with good natural light but away from direct sunlight to avoid fading.

The most popular ways to hang a canvas print are picture hooks and command strips. You can make sure your canvas remains nice and level using a pencil to mark where you’d like it to go and then confirm its placement with a spirit level.

Top tip: Hang your canvas so that it’s around 145 to 150cm off the floor. This is the average eye level, ensuring no visitors can miss it!
